A lot of people join network marketing because they want extra. Extra income to help ends meet. Extra money to help pay for expenses around the house. Or even an extra paycheck to cover that vacation you’ve been wanting to take.
But somewhere along the way, you saw the potential this industry has to offer. And now that you want to grow your business, you’re so stuck in the mindset that your business is just ‘extra’ that you’re not able to give it the attention it needs in order to be successful.
At the Summer of Success event, Kristen talked about what happens when you want more out of a business you’ve only seen as extra. Listen in to what she had to say about making your business a priority:
- What giving yourself permission to want more does to your mindset
- How seeing your business as extra can saddle you with complacency
- Why guilt over past hustle can stall your growth
- How to be grateful for what you have and still pursue more
Making your business a priority is not selfish. Instead look at prioritizing your business as a service to your future self, your family, and your customers. When you reevaluate your why you’ll see that you started this business in order to give you and your loved ones a sense of security. Keep that promise to yourself and go for more.

It’s time to ditch the hustle and lead from the heart. Let me show you the new way
Kristen Boss (00:48): Hey bosses! Welcome to another episode of the podcast this week, I decided to give you a little audio clip that was from the summer of success live event. I kind of went rogue for the first 10 minutes of the day two training. And I talked about this concept of extra versus more mindset when it comes to your business. And a lot of people were like, I just want to re-listen to that six minutes over and over again. So what I decided to do was pull the audio and share it with you for this week’s episode. And the context of this is I was thinking that morning, which is why I went rogue. I was thinking that morning about why, why do people talk themselves out of doing the work? Why do people quit? Why do they give up? Why do they tell themselves it’s fine? Why do they put their businesses on the back burner?
Kristen Boss (01:39): Why do they negotiate with themselves about what they want? And it, I had an epiphany and I realized it’s because some people come to their businesses thinking of it as extra telling themselves like I’m doing this for extra income and extra support. And it is that mindset, that very mindset that has people negotiating with themselves. So go ahead and listen to this clip. I hope you enjoy it. I was thinking about something yesterday, as I was just kind of, you know, mulling over the content for today. For today, I was thinking about when I asked you all yesterday, what is your why? Because you took the time to write down your compelling summer, why you have your big, why for your business. But again, I hope you really took the time and did not rush through it of really developing your summer. Why and why it’s important for you to stay consistent this summer, treat your business as a business and not something that you just get around to, or being passive with your business.
Kristen Boss (02:39): I really hope you took the time to really think about your summer. Why? And when I asked you guys yesterday, like tell me about why you got into this business. I saw dozens of comments from people where they were saying, I’m doing this for extra income. And I was really thinking about that. And today you’re going to be, you’re going to be given the, what you’re going to be told exactly what to do. And you’re 60 minutes for that hour that you have carved out. And I was thinking why don’t people when they have the tools and the time, like when it comes to carving out the time and you’re sitting down to do the tasks and you’re going to know the exact tasks to do, why is it that people negotiate with themselves? Why is it that people opt out of doing the work? Why is it that they talk themselves out of doing the work that leads to the rewards?
Kristen Boss (03:28): Why do people quit? Why do people give up? Why do people delay push off procrastinate, and tell themselves stories? Why? And I was really sitting down thinking about this one word that I think allows for you to negotiate, how you show up in this business. And are you ready? It’s the word extra. I want extra money, extra income. And here’s why I actually think that’s a, a problem. Because when you say it’s extra, you’re talking about it as if you don’t need it. It’s okay. It’s extra. So when it comes, when push comes to shove, when it’s hard, when it feels thankless, when it feels like knowing no one is showing up and your work is frustrating, what’s going to happen is you’re going to talk yourself out of it. Why? Because your goals, well, it’s extra anyways. It’s extra. Do you see how easy it is to talk yourself out of your dreams when you’re calling it extra?
Kristen Boss (04:21): As if it’s not as if it would be nice, but I don’t need it. How many of you end up saying I don’t need it? It’s okay. That’s why you think it’s negotiable. That’s why you talk yourself out of it. That’s why you say it’s okay if I don’t show up today, because my results it’s extra anyways, instead of it’s important and it matters and it’s life-changing and it’s necessary. And it’s essential. What if we stopped talking about extra as if it’s some luxury because guess what? We end up talking ourselves outta luxury, especially I see a lot of women saying, I want just enough. It’s like you talk yourselves into just enough. I want just enough in my life to maybe get by instead of I’m okay. I want to give you radical permission today to be okay with having more than enough.
Kristen Boss (05:13): It doesn’t make you greedy. It doesn’t make you selfish. It doesn’t make you wrong. But when we’re talking about extra, we start to bring in extra thoughts around it. I don’t need any extra. I’m fine where I’m at. And guess I can’t tell you how many hundreds of thousands of people handcuff themselves with two words. I’m fine. It’s fine. It’s fine. I don’t show up today. It’s fine. I don’t hit that goal. It’s fine that I quit. It’s fine because you’re telling yourself all of that. It’s extra. It’s not necessary. It’s too much. Maybe it’s a little greedy. Maybe I’m reaching too far. Why don’t I just stay here? You are made for more than saying right here. Please hear me that, hear that for me today. I want you to stop saying, it’s fine. I’m fine. That’s extra. What if it’s not extra? What if your life could be so much more with you allowing yourself to have more?
Kristen Boss (06:08): And I just want you to think of who could you bless with more? How can you be more of a present mom, more of a present spouse, more of a present partner, more of a present friend? I swear I can talk today. I’m getting really excited, but I want you to say it’s okay for me to have more and want more. That doesn’t mean we’re ungrateful for what we have now. There’s this very fine line between being truly grateful and content with what we have in our life and truly loving our life while we are in the pursuit of more. And I think a lot of times people will get into the gratitude and the contentment, which is so important because it helps you be content with the now, while you are working towards the future. That is so important, but be careful if you’re talking yourself into complacency and mediocrity and apathy telling yourself, I’m fine.
Kristen Boss (07:09): It’s fine. It’s not decide today. It’s not. I was like, I’m telling you. I was, I think I was doing my makeup this morning. I’m like, this is why, because we’re talking about it as if it’s extra, instead of it’s essential and necessary. And it matters. And it matters for me to show up in this way. So let’s remove extra from why you’re in this business. Amen. I didn’t even plan this part today, but I’m like, I got to talk about it because I think so many people, this is where they talk themselves out of their goals and their dreams and the heart, because you’re not going to do the hard for something that feels luxurious and extra. And non-essential, you’re just not, when you show up to do the work, it’s going to be pretty hard to show up when you’re like, Hmm, don’t need it.
Kristen Boss (07:58): Don’t need it. And some of you maybe you’ve stalled at a certain paycheck in your business for this very reason because you’ve told yourself it’s fine here. I mean, we’re not financially free. I know I came here for that. You know, we’re not debt-free. I know I came here for that too, but I mean it’s okay. And the reason you’re telling yourself it’s okay is because of stories you have about more, what the, what, the story you have about what it’s going to mean about you, what others might think of you with more. Trust me. If people are too triggered to deal with you with more, then maybe they don’t deserve to be in the circle. Right? I want you to think about how can I give more when I am being more and having more? How, how is more okay and safe. I also think another story that you have about going for more is the story of, if I go for more, I’m going to have to do more and give up more and give up this precious family that I have.
Kristen Boss (08:57): I’m going to have to sacrifice the things that matter to me. I’m going to have to sacrifice family. Listen. This is why I took all of yesterday to show you, that you can go for your dreams and build the business of purpose and have a life you love only if you do it with the intention only if you do it with a plan and decide, right? I love that more versus extra. It’s so different. More says, it’s okay. Extra is like, this feels a little indulgent. Ain’t going to do it. But some of you have stalled out in your paychecks because, and I’ve talked about this in other of my trainings. And if you’ve listened to my podcast, some of you have stalled out in your, in your paychecks because of how you got to your current paycheck completely exhausted. You’re like you don’t know what I gave up.
Kristen Boss (09:43): I didn’t watch TV. My kids didn’t see me. And you have all of this guilt behind your current paycheck. And the story you have for yourself is in order for me to go to the next, I’m going to have to do that again. And I can’t take it because I’m still beating myself up for how that went instead of hold up. What if none of that is true? What if I can go for more and do it differently? What if I can do those things without it coming outta cost to my emotional health, my mental health, my family, my relationships, my kids, my values. And this is what I teach inside the Social Selling Academy. This is what my students understand. It’s so fun when my students are like, I’m getting more pay, I’m making more. And my life is richer. I didn’t have to sacrifice everything.
Kristen Boss (10:31): So many of you are thinking in order for me to do more, I’m going to have to add like 30 more hours a week. And I’m like, no, you’re probably just doing a lot of busy work scrolling and wasting your time. So a lot of people won’t, won’t go for more because of all the stories they have about what doing more will take. Now, I don’t want you to hear that there are not sacrifices and hard things. There are sacrifices, but not the sacrifice of your well-being and your family and your values. That should never be the sacrifice. But when you’re doing things well, and with intention, you absolutely can go for more. If you’re ready for more, I’m going to show you how to do that.
Kristen Boss (11:14): That wraps up today’s episode. Hey, if you loved today’s show, I would love for you to take a minute and give a rating with a review.
