Transcript for Episode #94 Selling the Business:

Kristen Boss (00:05):  Welcome to Purposeful Social Selling with Kristen Boss. I’m your host, Kristen Boss. I’m a mindset and business coach with more than 15 years experience in both the product and service-based industries. I believe that social selling is the best business model for people wanting to make an impact while they make serious income. This is the podcast for the social seller, who is tired of feeling inauthentic in their business and desires to find a more purposeful and profitable way of growing their business. In today’s social media landscape. In this podcast, you will learn what it takes to grow a sustainable business through impactful and social marketing. It’s time to ditch the hustle and lead from the heart. Let me show you the new way.

Kristen Boss (00:48):  Hey bosses. Welcome to episode 94 of the podcast. Today we’re going to talk about selling the business model and what might have you shying away from making bold and powerful offers to your audience online on a consistent basis? I think sometimes most people feel quite confident when it comes to selling their product and selling something that is tangible, the tangible product that you know, your customer and your retail people can like put their hands on, feel, grasp, touch. And I think what I see a lot of people stumbling on in this business model and what keeps them from really growing their business and getting where they want to go is their inability to powerfully sell the business model. So we’re going to talk about that today because you can make great money with just customers, but that is not what makes the network marketing business model so unique and so amazing.

Kristen Boss (01:51):  You can have money today with the customers that you serve and sell to, but network marketing is also helping other people start their own business from home. It’s kind of a, I always kind of see it like as a franchise, like helping somebody else start their own business at home to sell their products to their audiences and to their networks. So that is where all the, I want to say, that’s what makes the business model very lucrative for people. That’s what makes this business model so unique because if you’re just selling to your audience if you’re just selling a product that’s really no different than just, you know, having an Amazon link and being an affiliate marketer and just making a direct commission off of your audience without being rewarded for your network and how you develop people, how you teach people, how you give them skillsets.

Kristen Boss (02:43):  And really, I just want you to know that your compensation in this business model is a direct reflection of how well you serve people, how well you serve your customers, and how well you serve your leaders. When they come to you, are you taking the time to help them develop certain skill sets? Are you taking the time to nurture them and support them and care for them and ensure that they’re going to have success? Or do you kind of have a hands-off approach with people that you recruit? Are you kind of in the camp of like, okay, now that you’re here, prove to me that you want it, we’ll see you in a week. Right. I see you know, a lot of what happens in this industry is people recruit them and they expect people to kind of show up all on their own and to prove that they want it.

Kristen Boss (03:30):  But most people, when they come to this business model, they do need some handholding. They do need to be given the steps and given a process and given a system in order to duplicate results. And I think some of you get pretty hung up on stories you tell yourself that keep you from telling people about the business model and getting people to join your team and making invitations. And I don’t even want to say getting people to join your team because that even sounds slightly coercive and forced. You don’t have to get anybody to join. You really. It’s just about attracting you being bold and confident and knowing what you offer in the world and people coming to you and deciding for themselves, they want this. And trust me, that happens the best people do not need to be talked into this business model. They will be sold from a really sincere and genuine place because of how they watch you serve online.

Kristen Boss (04:26):  So I want to talk about the number one reason why I see people shy away from making powerful offers to sell the business model. And some of you are like, what does it mean to make a powerful offer? I say this on my Instagram quite frequently. And it kind of surprises me when people say, well, what is a powerful offer? What does that mean? And a powerful offer is when you are making an invitation to explore what it is, you are offering them. You are offering them an opportunity to start an online business under your mentorship under a certain business model. That is the offer. A powerful offer is when you offer it in such a way that you have unshakable belief, that you can help them, that you can serve them, that you can help them get results. That this is the best thing in the world that you’re selling.

Kristen Boss (05:17):  It’s only a powerful offer when you feel powerful about it yourself. When you are in 100% belief that this is an amazing business model to offer people. If you are not in that belief if you’re secretly holding the belief of like, oh, I don’t know, I’m still not really sold on this business model. I don’t know if it really works, then you’re not going to make powerful offers. You’re going to make timid or shy or uncompelling offers people aren’t going to feel compelled to join you. They’re not going to be compelled to enter into a conversation with you. So if you want to compel people to enter into conversation and to explore the opportunity, to take that next step and go to an opportunity call, or to ask you questions, you need to be extremely compelling with your offer. You need to be very powerful in what you are offering and power comes from your beliefs about it.

Kristen Boss (06:10):  I really believe when I talk about the academy or whatever I offer, I’m always making powerful offers because I believe that the offer itself is powerful and transformative. Do you believe that about the business model? Do you believe that when you’re talking about the business to people, do you believe this is a powerful business model? And this is the most amazing thing, and it’s so transformative, it’s changed my life. It can change your life and it’s the best way for you to monetize online. And if you are not in that belief, you will find it very hard to sell the business model. You might even feel inauthentic selling the business model. And I feel like I could go down a rabbit trail about feeling inauthentic because I do think some of you use feeling inauthentic. You weaponize that against yourself as an excuse to not take any action.

Kristen Boss (07:00):  You have kind of misinterpreted or you have mislabeled a certain emotion like discomfort, and you’ve labeled it as inauthentic. Because as soon as you label it as inauthentic, you feel like it gives you the out to not do the hard thing, do not confuse discomfort for inauthentic. Inauthentic is when you aren’t being true to yourself and you’re going against a core value or a core belief. And you’re pretending to be something you’re not now when it comes to selling. If you’re like, yeah, but Kristen if you’re uncomfortable and you’re selling, I really want you to acknowledge. It’s not because you’re trying to be somebody that you’re not. There is a certain level of discomfort that comes with putting yourself out there in a way that people that can have thoughts about you. It’s feeling vulnerable. It’s doing something you’ve never done before.

Kristen Boss (07:59):  It’s learning a new skill that all can feel uncomfortable. It can feel vulnerable, but that doesn’t mean it’s inauthentic. If you are learning a new skill, if you are learning to do something you have never done before then, yeah. You’re probably going to suck at it at first and that’s okay. But it doesn’t mean you’re being inauthentic. And I just want you to just notice the narrative. You tell yourself about how you show up online. And if you’re telling yourself that just feels really inauthentic to me in order for you to not take action. I want you to notice if you’re telling yourself that, oh, that’s just not who I am. That’s just not authentic. I’m like, okay, well, there are some parts of this business where you’re going to have to learn new skills and you are going to have to grow and evolve and change in the best way, in a way that serves you and your audience.

Kristen Boss (08:50):  But if you’re just saying that feels inauthentic to me, and that’s not me, what I’m hearing you say is I like the way I am. I just want to stay here. And by the way, you can like the way you are. I want you to like the way you are, but I don’t want you to use it as an excuse to not grow and to stay where you are and to stay in your comfort zone and not do things that scare the crap out of you. Listen, you should be doing something every day. That scares the crap outta you. If you haven’t listened to my podcast episode, a thousand deaths to a million dollars, it was literally a thousand small deaths, emotional deaths, relationship deaths, social deaths, public deaths. It just felt like there were a million different ways to die emotionally when it comes to your personal growth journey.

Kristen Boss (09:34):  And so just notice that if you suddenly feel your feel fear towards taking an action, that’s uncomfortable. Notice if you’re telling yourself that’s just not authentic. And then it feels like you’ve given yourself a permission slip to not take the action that scares you. So be aware of that, be aware of that. And I did do a rabbit trail and now I have to go back, find where my original thought was. This is what happens when I record much later in the day, instead of early in the day. So welcome to the wild ride of my brain and probably evidence that I do have ADHD. So let’s move back into selling and selling the business model. And I think that’s where this whole idea of inauthentic came up, where people are like, I, I don’t feel like I can sell this business model because I don’t feel like that’s authentic.

Kristen Boss (10:20):  I feel like I’m figuring it out. And here’s the number one thing I see people struggling with, especially people who are making between a hundred and $500 a month. I feel like in that spot right there, that is when most people discredit the business model and discredit their success. They discount it, they think, yeah, but I haven’t had enough success to talk about this business model. Yeah. But I’m not further along. And so what happens is they keep waiting to make more money, to feel worthy about talking about the business. Instead of realizing that making $200 a month online is actually quite profound for a large percentage of the population. I want you to think of somebody who doesn’t have the luxury of disposable income by any means and how much $200 a month would change their reality. I want you to think about that, but when you’re too busy, discrediting it, discrediting it because you don’t feel like it makes a huge change in your own life.

Kristen Boss (11:28):  What happens is you end up staying exactly where you are. You’re like, okay, well, when I finally make more money, then I’m going to talk about this business model. But you’ve been staying at that same paycheck over and over. And again, because you are not talking about the business model, you’re not growing because you’re not talking about it and you’re not talking about it because you’re not growing. Do you see what’s happening here? But this is where I see people get caught up. They really think, well, I just don’t have enough success. And I was telling someone this in the academy the other day, I said, listen to me, the very results you are living in, right this moment, even if it’s a hundred dollars a month, somebody wants the results you are living in right at this moment. And many of you don’t believe that many of you think if you just were further along, then you’d be living a result that more people would want, but you’re not believing that the result you have in your hands right now, the most tangible, real thing, you think people don’t want it.

Kristen Boss (12:30):  And so you don’t sell it. So you’re quiet about it. And then you secretly judge yourself. Instead of listen, people don’t need you to be making millions of dollars to believe that you can help them make $200 a month online. They really don’t. They just want to know, can you help me? And the answer is yes, yes I can. And I want you to look for evidence of how you can help someone today, right now with exactly what you have. Because some of you think I can help somebody when I make more money. Maybe when I tweak this system a little bit, maybe when I make this graphic a little bit differently, or maybe when I’ve, you know, done a little more research. No. What happens is you keep deferring belief onto later down the road, or when you do more research. And when you, when you have more tools, instead of believing, I have everything I need right now to help somebody.

Kristen Boss (13:28):  I don’t need anything else. I have me and me as enough. I have my experience. And that is enough. But so many of you sit such inadequacy and insufficiency. When you think about selling to your audience, you think about all the ways you aren’t enough. You think all about all the results you don’t yet. Have you thought about all the ways you aren’t qualified enough? You think about all the ways you aren’t making enough money. And what you do is you just sit there and discredit and discredit yourself over and over and over again, until you truly feel inauthentic in selling the business model, because you’ve convinced yourself, I’m not qualified. I have no business talking about this business model because I’m an utter failure and that’s not true.

Kristen Boss (14:18):  But the stories you tell yourself, determine how you show up in your business. I really want you to think about how, and I want you to look for evidence. Seriously. This is your homework. It’s a short podcast episode today because I really want you to think about all the ways in which you have exactly what you right now at this moment, that the exact result you have right now is enough for somebody to say, I want that too, that making $200 a month is extraordinary. That is life-changing for somebody. But the moment you tell yourself, it’s not enough. And it’s not significant. You start discrediting your offer. You devalue your own offer because you’re literally looking at your offer the business a small, and you’re thinking it’s not that great yet. It’s not that great yet. And what’s interesting is you’re even if you did grow your income, you would still think it’s not that great.

Kristen Boss (15:22):  It’s nothing to brag about. And I know that because I coach top earners and top leaders in dozens of companies. And at some point every leader, I notice they go through a dry spell of recruitment because they feel like they’re a fraud. They stop believing that they can help people. And then for some reason, they start believing. I, you know, I don’t know how to help someone have success. Like I do only because they are discrediting how empowering it is for, or somebody to make a couple hundred dollars online. Cause if I was to ask any top leader in any company, I would say, can you help somebody make $200 a month online? They would say, yes. A resounding yes, that is enough for you to make powerful offers, to say, I can help you. You want to make $200 a month. I can help you.

Kristen Boss (16:13):  I have the exact tools and processes and systems. I have everything you need. And I am the leader that you, that you want. And I’m the only person you need to work with. And this is why you should work with me. That is a powerful offer. When you’re believing, of course, I can help someone. But leaders. What happens is, is they get so used to their own insane income that they start thinking that $500 a month. Isn’t powerful enough for somebody to join them. They start thinking that’s not enough for someone to join me because they’re used to their paychecks. They’re used to their way of living and they have forgotten just how extraordinary $200 a month is. Because if you don’t forget that $200 a month is extraordinary, you’ll never stop selling this business model. You will always be inviting people into this picture and how amazing this business model is.

Kristen Boss (17:08):  And yes, many people are going to come to this business model to make two to $400 a month. And that’s amazing. Don’t discount that. Don’t discredit that. I see so many people, this, it really irks me. So I’m, you’re all going to hear it from me today. Stop looking for people that want to make millions, stop, stop marketing that. And let me tell you why it’s okay to show possibility. That’s okay too, they look at this is possible in this business model, but to sell that as the end all be all, and like, yeah, I can show you like, here’s my income. And here’s what you can make too. I, I get that. I see the possibility of that. However, if you were constantly talking about the millions to be made, you might be attracting people that just want to make millions as quickly as possible. And I know that because they are, might be your people that come in and they are a flash in the pan.

Kristen Boss (18:07):  They join you. They become a frenzy of activity. They hustle themselves to death. And sometimes I’ve seen, I’ve seen these flash in the pan people. I’ve seen them in a company for as long as a year, and then they’re burnt out and they’re gone and you never hear from them again. And you wonder what happened. Those are the ones that join to make millions being like, how can I get there as quickly as possible? They burn themselves out. And because they didn’t build anything sustainable. And because they didn’t have any of the healthy foundations in place, they leave. And then you have to find somebody else. It is so much better for you to find somebody who’s like, I’m willing to do the work for the long game. I’m delighted to make $200, $300 a month. And then building the belief from the holy moly, $200 a month.

Kristen Boss (18:56):  This is amazing. I wonder what else I’m capable of doing? You’re forgetting that magical moment when someone gets their first paycheck, even if it’s a hundred dollars their brain when they see that they’re like this works, I can make money online. Stop believing that you have to find somebody that wants to go all the way to the top in your company. That’s believing that leaders are born. Instead of leaders are made. It’s like, I, I, I see people out there they’re like sniffing out. They’re like, I just need to find that one rock star. I need to find that unicorn. I’m like, there is no unicorn. There are people that you bring in and that you develop and you help them accomplish those goals. You have to develop people looking for a unicorn. You’re just going to find yourself turning and burning through people wondering why is nobody staying.

Kristen Boss (19:51):  Why do I, I’m still looking. You could be years down the road being like, I still looking for that, that one rock star. And I think some of you are even thinking, I’m looking for a me. I’m looking for a me. And I want you to ask yourself, how is that story? Not serving you. You looking for somebody. Who’s just like you. I can see some positives to that, but I want you to ask yourself, how is that? No, serving me when I’m looking for somebody to be like me because what I’ve typically seen is leaders will onboard somebody and they expect that person to be like the current version of themselves. It’s almost like they have this story of like, well, when I onboarded, nobody told me what to do. And nobody had a place to point me and I didn’t have enough belief and I didn’t have systems.

Kristen Boss (20:38):  And I just figured it out. And what happens is you lead from that place. You lead from the place of assuming everyone’s going to be like you. Well, you’re going to figure it out, figure it out. I figured it out. You figure it out, but that’s not leading. That’s not leading. That’s assuming. And that’s also abandoning people. Like what? Figure it out. I’m going to throw you in the deep end. Hope it works out. I manage to survive. Hope you do too. Instead of what skills do I have? What preexisting skills did I have that I brought into this business model that served me? And some people are coming into this business model without having the preexisting skills that you did. And so you have to teach them those skills and yes, that’s work. This is why I say the compensation of this business. My model is directly reflective of your ability to develop people and serve people, not just serving a customer base, but really learning to develop and serve your leaders.

Kristen Boss (21:41):  So I say all this, as you’re thinking about recruiting, as you’re thinking about talking to talking about your business and making bold powerful offers, check-in with your belief for are you discrediting your paycheck and thinking, this is nothing to talk about. Nothing to write home about nothing to share about this. Doesn’t make me an expert. And I can’t talk about my business until at least the number on this paycheck doubles. That is just a story you are telling yourself. And it allows you to say safe and small and comfortable and not have to make bold offers online. And maybe people do not have thoughts about you or whatever it is. I want you to just look at your paycheck and decide that this is amazing people. Would people want this result I’m looking at right now? People would join me today to have this exact result I do right now. And guess what? You’re not going to feel inauthentic, help somebody get to exactly where you are because you’ve done it yourself. If you’ve made $200 a month, you are sitting on evidence that you know how to help somebody else make $200 a month. You are qualified. Congratulations. Literally, I’m what I’m doing is I’m taking away all excuses from you today. I’m taking away the stories you’ve been yourself that keep you small, that keep you from talking about the business that keeps you from moving forward.

Kristen Boss (23:02):  I also want you to decide why the results you have are deeply transformative to someone in your audience. Why it’s impactful, think about, look, get your paycheck and think, how is this impactful to the people I serve in my audience? Why would they want this result? And how can I show up in a way that has them wanting to work with me in order to get this result, stop discrediting your success? Stop discounting. How far you’ve come and really sit with the belief, everything I have right now, I can help somebody have success. I don’t need to go out and research more. I don’t need to earn more, do more, hear more. And listen to me. Even if you’re like Kristen, I haven’t even made my first dollars in this business model. Borrow the belief from someone you have seen, have success. Look for evidence that it does in fact work.

Kristen Boss (24:06):  And this is true in every area of life. This isn’t just limited to network marketing. I, you know, coaches, a lot of coaches they’ll go out and they’ll get certified, but they’ve never had their first paying client. So they don’t have direct evidence that they can help somebody have results. The only evidence have is their own experience with maybe somebody coaching them or the transformation and results they have created in their own life. That’s it. But they have to go out there and start making powerful offers and say, I can help change your life. You need to work with me. I, this isn’t the way I can. This is the way I can help you achieve results. This is the way you can, you know, experience transformation with me, work with me today. And it’d be really easy for them to say, okay, well, I can’t talk about this until I have a paying client, but I don’t have a paying client.

Kristen Boss (24:59):  So I can’t talk about this. It’s the same cycle. Instead of like, I have exactly what I need to help somebody today. And I believe, I believe without a shadow of a doubt that I can help somebody have a transformation and I’m going to show up and sell from that belief, knowing it’s true until I get my first paying client. And then I keep building on that belief as I go. That’s what I did. When I started as a coach. I remember before I had my first paying client, I had to hold belief, like, of course I can help. I also had evidence that I was, I had helped so many people for free because I loved doing it. So this is what I say. Look for evidence of how you are already qualified with exactly what you have, but too many of you have been too busy looking for evidence of how you’re not qualified and how you need to wait longer and research more and accomplish more. Before you can talk about this. And I’m saying, stop that right now and look for evidence of how you already have everything you need to make powerful offers about this business model, to invite people into it with you, and that you can 100% help them have success. When you do this, you are going to see your team grow. You might even get your first recruit and I want that for you, but you gotta change the stories you’re telling yourself. You have everything you need. So go out there and serve well.

Kristen Boss (26:20):  We’ll see you next week. That wraps up today’s episode. Hey, if you love today’s show, I would love for you to take him minute and give a rating with a review.
